Childhood:
Arundhati Roy was born in the year of 1961 in Kerala. Her mother was Christian and her father was Hindu. However, they ended up getting divorced and Roy spent most of her childhood with her mom. Instead of going to school, her mother taught her. This may have been what influenced the style of her writing the most because her mother allowed her to write as she pleased and she was never forced to write with a strict set of rules.
Early Career:
Roy first started out her career by working on screenplays and helping to produce movies. Her first mildly successful film was called the “Bandit Queen”. However, it was very controversial and ended up causing a lawsuit.
Career as a Writer
The first novel Roy published was “The God of Small Things”. This book received the Booker Prize and had huge success all over the world. Because of the many English-speaking people in India, she wrote the book in English. It told the story of her childhood in Aymanam. It was this book that really started her fame.
Later Career
After publishing her novel, Roy continued to speak up against the problems arising in India today. She fights against the oppression of the Dalit’s and has spent time protesting against several projects including one that will force many people out of their homes. Her goal is to achieve a safe environment and protect the people of India.
